November updates

Good news! Richmond Jewish Day School recently completed a successful Ministry of Education Monitoring visit and will continue to receive its government funding. The BC Ministry of Education Curriculum updates will bring some changes to the report cards that we are presently using.  As a team, the teachers have begun the process of transitioning to a new format. The first parent teacher conferences are behind us and hopefully students have established learning goals for the next term.  One of the tenets of the new curriculum is for students to engage in self-reflection and goal setting. Our second term reporting period includes student led conferencing.  There are various content subject areas that have been adjusted at some grade levels.  Inquiry based learning, aboriginal perspectives, and technology applications are all important components of the revised BC curriculum.

We are pleased to be enhancing our school facility and look forward to a new banner on No. 5 Road, and new volleyball and badminton nets for our gymnasium. As well, we have had an upgrade in our technology with further Chrome books (laptops), Chrome boxes (desktops) and a reliable WIFI signal in all parts of our building thanks to a generous donation from ORT Vancouver.  Many students are excited about our new Coding and Robotics club that began recently.  All classrooms now have either Smart boards or projectors installed.
Our volleyball teams performed very well in extracurricular matches with neighbouring schools. Many RAC week events were held with student participation from King David High School, a Chesed (Kindness) visit to the Downtown East-side and even a flash mob!  We showcased our wonderful school during our Open House event on Wednesday, November 29, 2017.  Please spread the word as we continue to tour and welcome potential Kindergarten or other students to consider Richmond Jewish Day School for the 2018-2019 school year.
It was wonderful to meet many RJDS families at our recent collaborative Chickpea Shabbat dinner with Beth Tikvah Synagogue. The RJDS Board has now initiated the search for a permanent school principal and the recruiter recently visited the school to meet with stakeholders.
Please enjoy this newsletter with reports of some of the learning activities over the past weeks at RJDS.
